(Article
from 'That's Life'. Issue
46, 2004)
"After upgrading her computer, my daughter Heather kindly gave me her old
model. But it was wasted on me. At 62, I'd never used a computer.
'I wouldn't even know how to switch it on,' I laughed.
For months it sat collecting dust. I'd nicknamed it 'the beast',
because when I did try to teach myself, I'd end up frustrated
and deflated.
'All
the Self-help manuals I've
read could have been written
in Latin for all the sense
they made', I moaned.
Heather
offered to help me."

About Us
The first of these computer manuals was
primarily designed as a training manual for the Senior students
of Computer Capers for Seniors; a Seniors computer
tutoring business which began in the year 2000.
Heather Honeysett is the owner of the tutoring
business has produced these computer manuals with Seniors in
mind.
Heather, the writer of these computer manuals,
drew on her wealth of experience in training and
business as an Office Manager to help her to teach Seniors about computers.
Doreen,
Heather’s mother, had no previous knowledge
of computers, but she became involved in writing
these computer manuals when she inherited
Heather’s old computer after Heather updated
to XP. However, Doreen was intimidated by this machine;
thought she was too old to learn how to use it. Poor
hearing also made lessons difficult in a class situation.
And so Heather and Doreen became a mother and daughter
team writing computer manuals for Seniors.
Doreen, the novice, also becomes the student for
Heather’s computer manuals, always the
student willing to try out Heather’s work!
This way, they made sure that Heather’s computer
manuals were easily understood and that they
could be followed by a person on their own. One book
led to another as Seniors everywhere heard
about them and wanted more!
Heather and Doreen have worked on the computer
manuals for more than four years now and both
have benefited from a very strong relationship
that has developed over this time.
Computer Capers has often heard of people
using the computer manuals because they need
to know about computers in their work, or
perhaps of mature age students using the computer
manuals for their TAFE assignments. Computer Teachers
say that many of their students have hearing problems
and, by using these computer manuals, the
students are able to follow the lessons more easily.
More computer manuals coming? Well, who knows!
